Traditional Schools

Sande / Bondo

It could be found in all districts provinces and headquarters, the North,South,East and even the Western Area Freetown.

These are traditional schools that were introduced by ancestors then accepted by female heroines like Madam Yoko, Elder Kobolo Golama and others, embraced the concept of Bondo Society to teach young girls about: Nursing baby and child bearing , Cooking, Marriage, Civic Rights and above all female responsibility in national development and addressing societal issues.

Poro Society

This traditional School was introduced by the Bai Bureh, Alimamy Suluku, Foe Mansa Maturi, and other traditional Heroes, they believed this school as served as to teach fundamentals basic principles, which has guided man in his operations in every spheres within the boundaries of Sierra Leone. In this school every man is expected to learn basic Governance, Politics, Gorrilla Wars, Hunting, Family Welfare, Leadership and Negotiation.

Socio-Cultural Activities

The Lantern Festival

The Latan Festival also known as Latan Parade is one of the country’s most celebrated events. It is a yearly event organized during Independence anniversaries (April). This event has historic, cultural and religious significance. Historically, it portrays artifacts and activities of the slave trade, colonialism, and the economy, the attainment of independence and statute of important figures as well as Sierra Leoneans. The festival also blends culture through arts and craft, music and harmonizes religious tolerance.

The National Dance Troupe

Sierra Leone culture is incomplete without traditional or cultural dancing. The National Dance Troupe is the embodiment of all the ethnic groups that portray the country’s rich heritage and unique social culture through traditional dancing and songs. The Troupe has gained international status over the years through its excellent performances and has performed in the United States of America, Canada, England, Iran Libya and West Africa and won laurels in all of these performances. The Troupe is well known for its artistic, exotic, exciting and exhilarating traditional moves during performances.

Tangains Festival

This festival is normally organized by the Freetong Players. It is celebrated yearly during the festive season of December. This event brings the past into the present wherein, Sierra Leoneans are seen in attires worn during the pre-colonial and the colonial eras. Culture is also displayed. Experience the richness of Sierra Leone’s culture.

Masquerades

Various masquerades are organized throughout the country especially at the end of festive periods such as Eid Ul Adha, New Year and Easter holidays. These Masquerades attract famous groups such Paddle, Obasai, Bloody Mary to name a few.

The Ballenta Academy

A relatively old academy is involved in training youngsters in the art of theatre and music. The academy organizes concerts depicting local and international music.

The Freetong Players

This is a theatre group that specializes in local arts, mainly music reflecting on Sierra Leone’s socio-cultural beliefs and values.
