Sierra Leone Strengthens Its Position as a Leading Conference Tourism Destination in West Africa by hosting the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit

Sierra Leone has reinforced its growing reputation as a destination for international conferences, diplomatic engagements, investment forums and major regional events following the successful hosting of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit 2026 and the commissioning of two landmark facilities in Lungi.

The newly inaugurated Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre and the ECOWAS Logistics Depot were officially commissioned on 18 July 2026. The conference centre subsequently hosted the Summit on the Future of Regional Integration in West Africa and the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on 19 July 2026.

A New Gateway for International Events

Located in Lungi, Sierra Leone’s principal international gateway, the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre represents a major expansion of the country’s capacity to host high-level meetings, conferences, exhibitions, business forums and diplomatic events.

Its strategic location near Freetown International Airport provides convenient access for international delegates, investors, development partners and business travellers entering Sierra Leone.

During the commissioning ceremony, President Dr Julius Maada Bio described the facility as a strategic national investment that reflects Sierra Leone’s increasing confidence, ambition and influence within West Africa.

“From this gateway, Sierra Leone will increasingly connect West Africa to the world,” President Bio stated.

The modern facility complements the Bintumani International Conference Centre in Freetown, which hosted the ECOWAS statutory meetings from 12 to 17 July 2026. Together, the two venues demonstrate Sierra Leone’s capacity to coordinate and deliver major international programmes across multiple locations.

Advancing Conference and Business Tourism

The successful organisation of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit demonstrates Sierra Leone’s readiness to compete within the growing global market for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.

International events generate demand across the tourism and hospitality value chain. Visiting delegates require accommodation, catering, transportation, communication services, entertainment, cultural experiences and professional event support.

As Sierra Leone attracts more international conferences, the benefits are expected to extend to:

The ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit brought Heads of State and Government, ministers, diplomats, international organisations, development partners, business leaders and senior regional officials to Sierra Leone.

ECOWAS commended the Government and people of Sierra Leone for the hospitality and organisation provided throughout the summit. The event demonstrated the country’s capacity to coordinate protocol, accommodation, transportation, security, media operations and visitor services for a major international gathering.

Beyond the formal meetings, the summit provided an opportunity to present Sierra Leone as a welcoming destination defined by cultural diversity, religious harmony, resilience and the warmth of its people.

The commissioning of the international conference centre introduces new opportunities for tourism and hospitality development within Lungi and the wider Port Loko District.

A Trusted Centre for Regional Dialogue

The 69th Ordinary Session concluded with President Bio transferring the Chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The summit also appointed General Birame Diop of Senegal as the next President of the ECOWAS Commission for the 2026–2030 term, effective from 1 September 2026.

The peaceful transition of regional leadership, together with the successful commissioning of the two facilities, highlighted Sierra Leone’s growing role as a trusted host for diplomacy, peacebuilding, economic cooperation and international dialogue.

Second Batch of Budapest–Bamako–Freetown Rally Celebrates Grand Finish in Freetown

The second cohort of participants in the Budapest–Bamako–Freetown Rally has completed its entry into Sierra Leone, marking another significant milestone in the nation’s hosting of the internationally acclaimed adventure rally. The convoy, comprising 420 participants across 203 vehicles and motorbikes, entered Sierra Leone through the Gbalamuya Border Crossing before proceeding to Bureh Beach for an overnight stop designed to showcase the nation’s vibrant culture and renowned hospitality.

At Bureh Beach, rally participants were treated to an evening of cultural entertainment organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, and key partners. The programme featured live band performances, traditional cultural displays, and lively beachside festivities, creating a memorable atmosphere for the visiting teams. This event offered participants a unique introduction to Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting the country’s expanding tourism potential.

Following the overnight engagement, the convoy departed Bureh Beach under escort from the Sierra Leone Police and other security personnel, continuing its journey to the capital city, Freetown. The rally concluded at the Gigibonta Car Park, where government officials, tourism stakeholders, and enthusiastic spectators gathered to welcome the teams as they completed their remarkable intercontinental expedition across Europe and Africa.

Speaking at the finish-line reception, Mohamed Jalloh, Director of the Tourism, Travel and Exchange Program, emphasised the broader significance of the rally for Sierra Leone’s global engagement.

“The Budapest–Bamako–Freetown Rally is more than a motorsport adventure; it represents a cultural bridge that connects people, promotes friendship among nations, and highlights Sierra Leone as a welcoming and exciting tourism destination,” he stated.

The rally continues to deliver meaningful benefits to Sierra Leone by strengthening the country’s international visibility, attracting global visitors, and stimulating economic activity in communities along the route. Through events such as the Budapest–Bamako–Freetown Rally, Sierra Leone is steadily positioning itself as an emerging hub for adventure tourism, cultural exchange, and international events.

FREETOWN – The engines are roaring, the dust is settling, and the spirit of adventure is about to descend upon the Atlantic coast. Sierra Leone is gearing up to welcome the world’s largest amateur vehicular rally, the Budapest-Bamako Freetown Challenge, in what promises to be a spectacular display of culture, creativity, and endurance. This year, the rally arrives in two massive waves, bringing over a thousand adventurers from across the globe to the sandy shores of Bureh and the bustling streets of Freetown.

 

The 2026 edition of the rally is set to be one of the largest in its history. The first cohort, scheduled to cross the border on February 8th, comprises a staggering 352 vehicles and approximately 794 participants. These intrepid travelers have crossed continents, deserts, and savannahs to reach the “Explore West Africa Sierra Leone.”

A second wave of adventurers will follow a month later, arriving on March 5th, bringing another 203 vehicles and nearly 500 participants. Together, they represent a significant boost to local tourism and a unique opportunity for cultural exchange. The journey into Sierra Leone offers participants a scenic tour of the country’s diverse landscapes. On February 8th, teams will enter through two primary border crossing points: Kambia Balamya and Kamakwi Madina Oula.

 

Those entering via Kamakwi will navigate the legendary Kabba Ferry before merging with the main route at Masiaka. From there, the convoy will snake through Waterloo, heading straight for the pristine sands of Bureh Beach. Bureh Beach will transform into a vibrant hub of “Culture and Creativity.” The overnight stay is not just a rest stop; it is designed as an immersive experience featuring camping under the stars, live entertainment, and a “mini-gastronomy” festival showcasing the best of Sierra Leonean cuisine.

 

The climax of the event takes place on the morning of February 9th. At 9:00 AM, the engines will fire up for the final leg of the journey. The route is designed to maximize visibility and celebration, taking the rally through the heart of the capital.

 

The convoy will travel from Bureh Beach through Waterloo, past Up Gun, and onto the historic Kissy Road. In a bold move that brings the rally to the people, the vehicles will navigate the famous bustle of Abacha Street and PZ, turning the city center into a moving festival. From downtown, the route proceeds along Siaka Stevens Street, up to St. John, through Congo Cross and Wilkinson Road, before hitting the coastal stretch of Lumley Beach.

 

The journey officially concludes at the Gigibonta Car Park, where the Finish Line Gate awaits. Here, amidst the ocean breeze and cheering crowds, the participants will celebrate the end of a grueling but rewarding trans-continental journey.

 

For Sierra Leone, this event is more than just a rally; it is a testament to the country’s growing status as a premier destination for adventure tourism. As the dust settles on Lumley Beach this February, Freetown will once again prove that it is a city of warmth, resilience, and unbridled hospitality.

This year’s theme, “Boosting Social Impact and Education in Tourism via Innovation, AI, and Creative Industries,” underscores the conference’s focus on leveraging cutting-edge technological advancements to foster sustainable development and social impact within the tourism sector across Africa.

 

Minister Tunis expressed her enthusiasm about the gathering, emphasizing its significance in shaping the future of tourism management and transformation in the continent. She highlighted Sierra Leone’s dedication to embracing innovation and creativity as vital tools for advancing its tourism industry and creating more inclusive economic opportunities.

The airline, a subsidiary airline of Dublin-based Avia Solutions Group which launched in April 2024, will operate three weekly services between London Gatwick and Freetown International Airport on behalf of Air Sierra Leone from 16 June. The first flights took place on 26 and 27 April, coinciding with Sierra Leone’s Independence Day.
Alastair Willson, CEO of Ascend Airways, said, “It is a true honour to have operated the historic London Gatwick to Freetown flight on behalf of Air Sierra Leone. It took months of hard work to set this connection up, and we are looking forward to operating this much-needed route during the summer and winter season.”
Ascend Airways also operates routes on behalf of TUI Airways, with plans to expand with a Malaysian sister carrier.

Sierra Leone Tourism delegation interface with National Railway Museum in York England

11th Nov.2022 York England Helen Ashby OBE. BA. FMA is one of the longest   staff from York National  Railway Museum England who received the Sierra Leone’s Tourism delegation from York train station.

In her welcome note, she appreciated the team, for endeavouring to honour their invitation to see the monumental Relics of their Railway Museum.

This Iconic  National Railway Museum is a museum in York settlement which forms  segment  of the Science Museum Group.

 

The official visit today, help the delegation to understand essence of  the museum which tells the story of rail transport in Britain and its impact on society. This historical museum is a domicile for preserving national collection of historically significant, which includes: railway vehicles such as Mallard, Stirling Single, Duchess of Hamilton and a Japanese bullet train.

In addition, the team discovered that the  National Railway Museum anchor a diverse collection of other objects and articles that has elementary pieces of the historical touch of fine arts.

Madam Ashby in the escorted tours made us to understand, that this great museum has won many accolades and  awards, including the European Museum of the Year Award in 2001.

Freetown, Sierra Leone

After Sierra Leone’s railways shut down in 1974, the same  collection of engines and other artifacts spent decades hidden away in this old workshop—now a museum. However, we are here to see how these structures been done here could be replicated in the future.

The General Manager National Tourist Board, Mrs. Fatmata Mida  Carew in addition, emphasize the need  for  healthy collaboration with York Museum and Sierra Leone Railway Museum. With this she believes, heritage and culture will have a place value of sustainability.

In conclusion, the Chairman Board, Mr. Tamba Alliue Kokobaye called on Madam Hellen Ashby to foster the collaboration between York Railway Museum and Sierra Leone National Railway Museum, Coordinated and directed by Monuments and Relics Commission.

The visit to York National Railway Museum and York city  itself is an eye opener, to the team; viewing their key Monuments and Relics, gives a clear insight to the team on maintaining heritage and cultural elements.
